Torture? We Don’t Know What Real Torture Is!

Filed under: War — admin @ 4:32 pm

[LINK]

Truthfully, I have been questioned much harder by school administrators than this kid, who quite possibly killed an American soldier, was. [Side note: the school administrator accused me of creating another “Columbine” because I was “bullying” someone. The kid I was “bullying” is still my friend - Hell, his mom called me the other day asking about school - and there was no bullying going on.]

But hey, what do I know?

But then again I do know some things. And one thing I vaguely remembered when I first saw this video, in a story by NP contributor mchawk, was that al Qaeda has a nifty little handbook that deals with these instances when one of their “brave and courageous freedom fighters” is caught by the “Great Satan.” And what do you know, there is a manual.

And the eighteenth lesson in this book is about “prisons and detention centers” - like Guantanamo. And here’s what it says with the important parts put in bold by me:

1. At the beginning of the trial, once more the brothers must insist on proving that torture was inflicted on them by State Security [investigators] before the judge.

2. Complain [to the court] of mistreatment while in prison.

3. Make arrangements for the brother’s defense with the attorney, whether he was retained by the brother’s family or court-appointed.

4. The brother has to do his best to know the names of the state security officers, who participated in his torture and mention their names to the judge. [These names may be obtained from brothers who had to deal with those officers in previous cases.]

5. Some brothers may tell and may be lured by the state security investigators to testify against the brothers [i.e. affirmation witness], either by not keeping them together in the same prison during the trials, or by letting them talk to the media. In this case, they have to be treated gently, and should be offered good advice, good treatment, and pray that God may guide them.

6. During the trial, the court has to be notified of any mistreatment of the brothers inside the prison.

7. It is possible to resort to a hunger strike, but it is a tactic that can either succeed or fail.

8. Take advantage of visits to communicate with brothers outside prison and exchange information that may be helpful to them in their work outside prison [according to what occurred during the investigations]. The importance of mastering the art of hiding messages is self evident here.

-When the brothers are transported from and to the prison [on their way to the court] they should shout Islamic slogans out loud from inside the prison cars to impress upon the people and their family the need to support Islam.

- Inside the prison, the brother should not accept any work that may belittle or demean him or his brothers, such as the cleaning of the prison bathrooms or hallways.

- The brothers should create an Islamic program for themselves inside the prison, as well as recreational and educational ones, etc.

-The brother in prison should be a role model in selflessness. Brothers should also pay attention to each others needs and should help each other and unite vis a vis the prison officers.

- The brothers must take advantage of their presence in prison for obeying and worshiping [God] and memorizing the Qora’an, etc. This is in addition to all guidelines and procedures that were contained in the lesson on interrogation and investigation. Lastly, each of us has to understand that we don’t achieve victory against our enemies through these actions and security procedures. Rather, victory is achieved by obeying Almighty and Glorious God and because of their many sins. Every brother has to be careful soas not to commit sins and everyone of us has to do his best in obeying Almighty God, Who said in his Holy Book: “We
will, without doubt. help Our messengers and those who believe (both) in this world’s life
and the one Day when the Witnesses will stand forth.”
May God guide us.

The purpose of claiming torture is obvious - we are a nation of good people and thinking of someone getting tortured makes us uneasy. It’s also against international law (arguably) and it also distracts from what the combatant actually did and will do, in all likelihood, if he is allowed back onto the battlefield. This story, about the teenager, is getting traction in Canada because he is a teenager and a Canadian citizen (his mother sent him and his older brother to terrorist training camps - from NP contributor Barry Artiste).

Him being 15 or 16 or just even a teenager does complicate the issue legally. But I’ve got to tell you, if you’re fighting someone it doesn’t matter how old they are, does it? This young man (as is the parlance of educators when speaking of teenage boys) had to know what he was doing. He went to war to kill and/or be killed. And don’t underestimate the capabilities of teenagers. They are smart and often know all-to-well what they are doing (seeing as I am a recovering teenager, I think I know what I’m talking about a little).

Was he tortured? We cannot tell from this footage. What we do know is that it just makes sense for detainees to say they were tortured. It gives them a leg up on their opponents. And it’s also possible that this kid is so skinny because he went on a hunger strike or, like many other teenagers, is just skinny. (BTW, do you know what al Qaeda’s meal plan is?)

Besides all this caring and concern for this kid who is a terrorist just realize that he is still alive, getting fed well, and will live to see another day. But Eugene Armstrong isn’t so lucky. He was beheaded by this kid’s “brothers.” Do you want to see what real torture is? Watch this video (WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO OF A BEHEADING). So, you know what, I won’t be losing any sleep because this kid, who quite possibly killed one of my countrymen, isn’t being given full protection of the law. BigT

Oil Prices Plummet When Ban on Drilling Was Lifted

Filed under: Economics, Elections, Executive Suite — admin @ 2:38 pm

I thought it was going to take ten years to see any change. Look, the market works this way (yes, even those mysterious “speculators” whom many say are the cause of this rise in oil prices): when the market thinks there’s going to be an expansion in supply in the future the price will go down because there is a new equilibrium set between supply and demand. And let’s get another thing straight, there is still a ban on drilling on the outer continental shelf - a congressional one that is set to expire at the end of September (think they’ll reup it?).

Oil prices have gone up for a number of reasons: the value of the dollar has gone down, the threat of war in the Middle East (Iran), the looming middle classes that are set to significantly grow in China and India, and our obstinate refusal to drill for any of our own oil which is just a manifestation of the environmentalist movement.

And no, drilling will not be the answer forever and ever. There is no, zero, zilch, nada, there is no answer for our energy needs that will last forever. In the meantime it makes sense to drill for an energy source that we have used to spur on economic growth for over the last century. Drilling is the answer.

In a dramatic move yesterday President Bush removed the executive-branch moratorium on offshore drilling. Today, at a news conference, Bush repeated his new position, and slammed the Democratic Congress for not removing the congressional moratorium on the Outer Continental Shelf and elsewhere. Crude-oil futures for August delivery plunged $9.26, or 6.3 percent, almost immediately as Bush was speaking, bringing the barrel price down to $136.

Now isn’t this interesting?

Democrats keep saying that it will take 10 years or longer to produce oil from the offshore areas. And they say that oil prices won’t decline for at least that long. And they, along with Obama and McCain, bash so-called oil speculators. And today we had a real-world example as to why they are wrong. All of them. Reid, Pelosi, Obama, McCain — all of them.

Traders took a look at a feisty and aggressive George Bush and started selling the market well before a single new drop of oil has been lifted. What does this tell us? Well, if Congress moves to seal the deal, oil prices will probably keep on falling. That’s the way traders work. They discount the future. Psychology and expectations can turn on a dime.

Iran Was Bluffing - It Cannot Reach Israel

Filed under: War — admin @ 3:43 pm

UPDATE: I was looking around trying to figure out why Iran would lie about this. I don’t think it has anything to do with Iran’s Shahab-3 missile being based off of North Korea’s No-dong (no kidding) missile. Maybe it could be about the price of oil - it went up when they “test fired” these “far reaching” rockets. Or maybe it could have been about forcing the hand of their foes, like Israel when they unveiled a new spy plane in response to these tests.

According to Drudge Iran tried to pull off a big bluff:

IRAN MISSILE TEST BLUFF: OLD ROCKETS, BOGUS VIDEO
Fri Jul 11 2008 15:18:02 ET

Many of Iran’s claims related to missile tests during “Great Prophet III” war games — appear to be smoke and mirrors!

The missiles tested DID NOT not have 2,000-kilometer range, the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report on Saturday.

Iran DID NOT launch a Shahab-3 missile, able to reach Israel.

It was an older missile that was out of production, newsroom sources tell DRUDGE.

And a video showing what appeared to be many missiles being fired — is actually one missile, filmed from different angles!

NYT’s Bill Broad is planning to quote military insiders.

Developing…

What does this mean? Quite a bit actually. If Iran had missiles that could reach Israel and further out (Russia, Turkey, China, maybe even Europe) it would have made Iran more of an international player. Without these rockets they are still stuck being a regional player that likes to reach out and touch opponents through the funding of terrorist activities as far away as South America.

But why bluff? They had to know that we would figure it out. There were stories circulating that the photos were faked a couple of days ago. It was only a matter of time before everyone would find out they were lying. BigT
