BigT’s Roundup - Tuesday Early Ed. (10-16-07)

Maybe Thompson did come into the race too late because a key member from Bob Jones University has thrown his support behind Mitt Romney according to Mike Allen author of the Politico Playbook.

SCOOP: Michael M. Phillips of The Wall Street Journal reports on the ‘Washington Wire’ blog: ‘A top official at Bob Jones University, the evangelical Christian school with a history of anti-Mormon rhetoric, plans to throw his weight behind Mormon presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Robert R. Taylor, dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences, said he believes the former Massachusetts governor is the only Republican candidate who both stands a chance of winning the White House and will reliably implement the anti-abortion, antigay marriage, pro-gun agenda of Christian conservatives. ‘The fact that I’m seen as a Religious Right person would hopefully get others to step out for him,’ Taylor said in an interview in Greenville, S.C., the university’s hometown.’ He said he plans to announce the endorsement in the near future.

I know that there’s this theory that has been bandied about how Evangelicals will not in a million years vote for a Mormon. But that is totally ridiculous. Who do you think Evangelicals are going to throw their support behind? Hillary or Romney? The driving force behind this next election is not going to be Iraq, religion, or anything that seems important now. The most important aspect of the next election that you need to follow is the high negatives that Hillary is getting right now and will continue to get as more concentrated attacks are leveled at her.

One attack that is gathering some traction against Hillary is her scandal with financier Hsu. She has already returned over $800,000 from her campaign coffers and now the LA Times has the list. No, I haven’t seen the list because they aren’t showing the list to anyone yet, but it is out there. However, there were some other politicians who were named as receiving donations from the same donors that Ms. Clinton has given money back to.

In the 2005-2006 election cycle, the 249 donors gave as much as $670,000 to federal candidates other than Clinton, a comparison of the names with other campaign records shows. Among the other recipients, the largest appeared to be the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee at $78,000, followed by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill with $43,000, and Harold Ford, a Tennessee Democrat who lost his race for the U.S. Senate, at $42,000.

Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.) received $28,000 and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee received $27,000. A political action committee for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) received $24,500, and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s campaign got $19,000.

Why this isn’t escalating into an Abramoff-like scandal is not beyond anyone. The leftists in the media want to mitigate all damage that can be done to Ms. Clinton for their reasons. The biggest challenge for the GOP is going to be making their attacks against her stick and she and her husband have proven they have a Teflon coating when it comes to attacks both damning and superfluous.

Another attack against Clinton that is struggling to gather traction in the pro-Clinton media is the charge that during the early ’90s she listened to taped recordings of phone calls between political adversaries.

Republicans are focusing on an allegation in a recent book by two Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, which suggests Clinton listened to a secretly recorded conversation between political opponents.

In their book about Clinton’s rise to power, Her Way, Don Van Natta Jr., an investigative reporter at The New York Times, and Jeff Gerth, who spent 30 years as an investigative reporter at the paper, wrote: “Hillary’s defense activities ranged from the inspirational to the microscopic to the down and dirty. She received memos about the status of various press inquiries; she vetted senior campaign aides; and she listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics plotting their next attack.

“The tape contained discussions of another woman who might surface with allegations about an affair with Bill,” Gerth and Van Natta wrote in reference to Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton. “Bill’s supporters monitored frequencies used by cell phones, and the tape was made during one of those monitoring sessions.”

A GOP official said, “Hillary Clinton’s campaign hypocrisy continues to know no bounds. It is rather unbelievable that Clinton would listen in to conversations being conducted by political opponents, but refuse to allow our intelligence agencies to listen in to conversations being conducted by terrorists as they plot and plan to kill us. Team Clinton can expect to see and hear this over and over again over the course of the next year.”

Gerth told The Hill that he learned of the incident in 2006 when he interviewed a former campaign aide present at the tape playing. He has not revealed the aide’s identity. Clinton’s campaign has not disputed any facts reported in the final version of his book, which became public this spring, he said.

“It hasn’t been challenged,” said Gerth. “There hasn’t been one fact in the book that’s been challenged.”

Didn’t Nixon resign because he had some electronic surveillance done against his political adversaries? Why, yes, I think he did do just that. And to think that a democrat presidential candidate would sink to Nixon’s level. It’s a sad world that democrats live in.

Heck, what about the left’s opposition for wiretapping terrorists? Why is it OK for Ms. Clinton to listen to taped recordings her political enemies had over the phone but it is against the law for our military and intelligence services to listen in on our enemies’ conversations without a time consuming warrant process? Just imagine if Rove had listened in on conversations between Bill Clinton and Sandy Berger before Berger went into the National Archives and Rove found out that Clinton told him to “lose” those documents. Rove would be the one who would have to be pleading mea culpa while Clinton and Berger would get off free and clear.

Well, something like this has already happened. Remember how that republican aide found a democrat memo on a computer that was left on? Well, if you don’t that memo said that Miguel Estrada needed to be opposed because “he is Latino” and other racially backed reasons for stonewalling judiciary appointments. And what did the republicans do? They rolled over and asked for forgiveness for having a renegade staffer finding documents left out in the open.

This is the way it goes in Washington right now. The Clintons break the law and monitor opponents communications is wrong but is understandable seeing how much attacks the poor Clintons have to endure. A republican staffer finds a document that shows the democrats are opposing a judicial nomination based solely on race and the staffer is the one who gets in trouble. “You are now entering the Twilight Zone.”

And when you get reporting from the USA Today that puts the best spin on Clinton why should we expect to get a fair shake from the media. The aforementioned USA Today lead off their story about the elections today this way:

Presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton for the first time wins the support of 50% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, and she commands the most enthusiastic backing of any contender in either party.

The survey, taken Friday through Sunday, depicts a landscape for 2008 that seems to be moving toward Clinton in particular and Democrats in general. Democratic voters are more committed to and energized by their field of candidates than Republicans are.

The only problem with this breathless coronation of Ms. Clinton is that she still has the highest unfavorable ratings of any of the candidates. She clocked in at 44% in this most recent poll while all the other candidates were in the 30s. She has received an unfavorable rating of as high as 52%. It is probably true that she is going to win the nomination but I think that the new media is going to have a field day with this election. The right, which is perceptibly stronger then the left in this arena thanks to talk radio, is going to fire every bullet in their arsenal against Ms. Clinton. Things can change quickly in this fluid environment and no one really knows what is going to happen over the next year. But it will be one of the most partisan campaigns in recent memory.

Even though it is true that the right must have incontrovertible evidence to diminish the Clinton juggernaut the same situation is forming on the left with their attacks against Rush Limbaugh. “Dingy” Harry Reid, as Rush likes to call him, has tried to silence Rush by distorting a comment Rush made in a broadcast about a man who claimed to be a Ranger when he, in fact, never made it out of boot camp. He called the guy a “phony soldier” and he is a phony soldier by any reasonable definition. The left seized upon this by claiming that Rush was saying that every soldier who disagrees with the war is a phony soldier. Unfortunately for the left Rush is developing his own Teflon coating for political attacks.

Rush has been able to defend himself against these spurious assaults on his integrity by placing the blame back on his accusers and by making a mockery out of their actions. The most recent and most stirring example of his gamesmanship comes from his auctioning off of a letter “Dingy” Harry Reid sent to Rush’s business partner at Clear Channel asking for him to admonish Rush for what Rush said. Here’s Rush announcing the auction to an audience.

And here’s where the auction is via eBay.

As of my writing of this Roundup the auction is at $55,000 for the letter. All that money is going to a charity that Rush has given much to in the past called the Marine Corp - Law Enforcement Foundation. Oh, and whatever the letter goes for Rush is going to match it. What has “Dingy” Harry Reid done for the troops lately?

I can tell you what Nancy Pelosi has done for the troops though. After her Middle Eastern tour earlier this year where she met with some tin pot dictators she must have realized that the most important issue facing the Middle East was the genocide of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire. To call attention to this she has pushed through a resolution condemning this historic action. The problem is is that it is pissing off an ally of ours in Turkey. An ally we need because we get supplies to our troops through Turkey.

The democrats knew that this was going to be the reaction from Turkey and with escalating tensions between Turkey and a Kurdish terrorist group based partially in Northern Iraq it is looking more likely that major problems will arise from this situation. The Turkish army may now get the green light from their president in Turkey, who has been the leading force in holding their army back from attacking Kurdish Iraq, because our congress has embarrassed the Turkish government in the international community.

She has endangered the most peaceful region in Iraq so she can score some political points at home. And it is not out of the realm of possibility that she is doing this specifically to foment violence in Northern Iraq so as to destroy all the progress we and the Iraqi government is making there. I don’t say this lightly because it is a very serious charge. But anyone with a brain and a handle on the situation should have known that a likely outcome of belittling the Turkish government at a time like this could have dire consequences. Every politician who voted for this resolution voted for destabilization of Iraq and the deaths of more Americans, Iraqis, and Turks.

Furthermore, if events take a couple of wrong turns we may be headed for the first World War fought with nukes on both sides. Putin has gone to meet with Iran’s Ahmadinejad and Putin told the United States to basically stay out of Iran and other Caspian States (Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Republic, might be used as a launching pad for an attack on Iran as well as the use of the Caspian Sea for our ships) or else. Things are also heating up with China because the Dalai Lama is going to get a Congressional Gold Medal and they just can’t stand that. So, to sum all this up: Turkey, Iran, Russia, and now China are pissed at us for a variety of reasons. My greatest worry about this is that we don’t have a large enough Army and definitely not a big enough Navy to deal with the gigantic engagement that would happen if things got really hairy.
