BigT’s Roundup - (9-18-07)

Filed under: Statism, Culture, Cigars, Economics, Wolves in Sheeps Clothing, War, Roundupalooza — admin @ 12:49 am

This just in: Muslim terrorist group had plans on taking over America! Oh, wait, didn’t we all know that? Well I guess it’s better late than never for The Dallas Morning News.

Amid the mountain of evidence released in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial, the most provocative has turned out to be a handful of previously classified evidence detailing Islamist extremists’ ambitious plans for a U.S. takeover.

And for everyone waiting for some prominent Muslim to come out against terrorism, your wait is over. A Saudi cleric, once praised by Osama, has spoken out against the terror master mind. From The New York Sun:

In the long letter published on an Arabic Web site, Cleric Salman al-Awdah calls on Mr. bin Laden to end the killing of innocent Muslims and others in terrorist acts in Iraq and elsewhere around the world.

“How much blood has been spilt? How many innocent people, children, elderly, and women have been killed, dispersed, or evicted in the name of Al-Qa’ida?” the letter says. “My brother Usama Bin Ladin, the image of Islam today is not at its best.”

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly received a copy of the letter today during his morning briefing, and police department officials are calling the letter a “positive indicator” that Mr. bin Laden could be losing support.

Mr. al-Awdah is an independent cleric who was jailed for several years for criticizing the Saudi government’s links to America. He toned down his criticism after his release from prison in 1999, although he reportedly promoted Iraqi resistance when American troops recaptured Fallujah from Iraqi insurgents in 2004.

In the letter, Mr. al-Awdah, who has condemned terrorism in the past, appears to distance himself from terrorist acts that investigators have said were inspired by his teachings. Investigators in the Madrid train bombings, for example, have reportedly said Mr. Al-Awdah’s preaching may have emboldened the attackers.

Mr. al-Awdah asks, “Have we reduced Islam to a bullet or a rifle? Has the means become an end?”

From the Arizona Republic via Hugh Hewitt we also have an instance where the widow of a murdered soldier has called the media out on the mat for playing al Qaeda propaganda in a push for increased anti-war sentiment.

Days after an al-Qaida-linked group released a video showing the body of a Luke Air Force Base fighter pilot killed in Iraq last year, his widow lashed out at the national media, accusing it of politicizing and using the images to erode public support for the war.

Ginger Gilbert, making her first public comments since the video emerged last week, said Tuesday that she couldn’t remain silent after watching media coverage of a “disturbing video” of the corpse, identification card and crash site of her husband, Maj. Troy Gilbert.

“When media chooses to use Troy’s plane crash as a political catalyst to generate anti-war sentiment, it only serves to degrade the moral integrity my husband possessed and the morale of those still selflessly serving,” Gilbert said at news conference at Glendale’s Falcon Dunes Golf Course, across from Luke.

“Every time the press lends credibility and significance to terrorist propaganda clearly designed to erode public support or questions the validity of our brave soldiers’ selfless acts of service and the war itself,” she added, “it only serves to damage our country from within its own borders and embolden those who would do us harm.”

Laura Ingraham is a good person and means well. But when you want to get between me and my trash television on Cavuto’s show I have to draw the line. Cavuto’s show is the best because of all the skin it shows and I would not change it at all.

Stossel’s most recent article rounds up his show from last week, which I wrote about in Stosselize Me! Most you’ve heard but here is what a doctor who believed in the Canadian system before he became a doctor but changed his mind after working there for a little while:

“People line up for care; some of them die. That’s what happens,” Canadian doctor David Gratzer, author of The Cure, told “20/20″. Gratzer thought the Canadian system was great until he started treating patients. “The more time I spent in the Canadian system, the more I came across people waiting. … You want to see your neurologist because of your stress headache? No problem! You just have to wait six months. You want an MRI? No problem! Free as the air! You just gotta wait six months.”

There is a reason why I keep on thrashing the liberals even though they believe in an ideology that has no arms. Just because they have no arms, ideologically speaking of course, does not mean they cannot kill someone with a head butt. Click the link, it’s a duesy.

Unfortunately there’s no way I know of to put the next video on this post so I’ll just give you the link right here. Jim Cramer tries to talk some sense into Ed Shultz about what Greenspan meant in his book The Age of Turbulence about how Greenspan says that Iraq was not done for oil. Of course it could be considered a motivating factor because Iraq wouldn’t have mattered if not for its oil but Shultz would have none of it.

From the Huffington Post we get this story about how Obama is casting himself as Robin Hood. I have never understood why anyone would call someone who wanted to raise taxes a Robin Hood type. Robin Hood stole from the government - the sheriff and the acting king - and gave it back to the people. This just shows that liberals have no ability to comprehend even the most basic of children’s stories so it is no wonder they can’t comprehend something like spreading democracy or missile defense.

And finally David Savona at Cigar Aficionado takes us on a tour of the Padron’s facility. It is great learning about the different cigar makers and their families. Also, it’s good that the site is back off, I’ve had CA withdrawals for a couple days now! BigT

Unwinding After a Long Week: August 27 - September 2

Filed under: Cigars, Roundupalooza, ConservativeINC News and Updates — admin @ 3:01 am

This was a trying week. Juggling graduate school and launching a site was hard, but I have pretty much gotten through it. So I did what I know best. Light up a Cusano Carojo and poured myself some single barrel Wild Turkey.

Figuring out all the intricacies that go along with building a blog was a lot more difficult than I thought it would but well worth the effort. Some interesting stuff happened in the news world this week. Tony Snow announced his retirement from public life. I hope he is able to enjoy a long life in front of him with his friends and family. A truly nice man.

Craig’s peccadillo was hot news because there was nothing important happening in the news this week. And the stock markets somewhat rebounded. Personally, my portfolio was up a little over five percent this month so I don’t know what the big fuss is all about. Oh, yeah, that’s right; some companies went under. As long as the government doesn’t come to the rescue the economy will be stronger.

Oh, I also got my first comment on this site. I guess my dogs aren’t the only ones reading this blog. Awesome. Some things that are not awesome would be the anti-American movies that were announced. Some other things would be the discovery of people with bombs in this country. But we persevere.

Everybody have a happy Labor Day and keep on checking into this site for all the best opinion you will find on the Internet. BigT

Cigar Smokers Unite!

Filed under: Cigars, Wolves in Sheeps Clothing — admin @ 6:00 pm

SCHIP them! This, if you do not know already, is the ill-conceived boondoggle for nanny-staters everywhere that will punitively tax cigars. At one point the cap for the tax was going to be increased to ten dollars per stick from a current cap of five cents. Five cents to ten dollars! Well, according to this great blog by David Savona from Cigar Aficionado that cap has been reduced to just three dollars. That’s only about a 6,000% increase in the tax. According to Mr. Savona there is a tobacco roots effort to stop this tax that would at least severely damage the industry if not destroy it. Here is an excerpt about who is doing yeoman’s work on this:

In addition to the constant lobbying efforts by the Cigar Association of America plus the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America, others have made efforts to fight this tax. Rocky Patel recently posted a video on his website urging cigar smokers to fight. Drew Estate, Camacho Cigars and many other cigar companies met in Miami to discuss fighting the tax. Cigar accessory maker Xikar Inc. just created its first cigar brand, called Defiance, and five percent of the proceeds will go to fight for tobacco rights. Alejandro Martinez-Cuenca, the owner of Joya de Nicaragua and a politician in his native country, is working on a documentary that he plans to bring to Congress in September to show how the tax would impact Americans as well as the economies in cigar-producing countries such as Nicaragua. “Handmade cigar consumption is not only for the rich,” he says. Cigar retailers such as Jeff Borysiewicz of Corona Cigar Co. have been writing their congressmen, and a group of cigarmakers plans to travel to Washington in September to plead their case.

In a blog by Jack Bettridge in Cigar Aficionado relates the story of a guy who called up his congresswoman to complain about the ban. The man asked his congresswoman why there could be no cigar smoking even if there was a designated area and a smoke eater there to purify the air she made the astonishing retort that people in the kitchen would still be exposed. Understandably the man was irate because cooks are continuously exposed to smoke from smoked salmon and the like.

Like I have said in a previous blog all some people want to do is to control your life. If smoking were so bad than why not ban it? The short answer is that it would take a lot of money away from the children. But even if the politicians were being serious why not ban gasoline? It is going to be responsible along with coal and other “dirty” energy sources for the destruction of the world in ten years (after ten years are up it will be another ten years of course).

The nanny-staters will not stop with cigars and cigarettes, if that was what you were thinking. They have already declared war on fast foods and fatty foods. They will try to take control over the health care system and they already have control over the school system. Next will be what you can listen to on the radio and then maybe what you can access on the Internet. Even if you are not a cigar smoker you need to help the rest of us who are stop those who want control before they take control over your life as well. BigT
